Worcester, Massachusetts

 The City of Worcester in Worcester County, Massachusetts is the second largest city in New England after Boston and is also known as the “Heart of the Commonwealth” since it is located right smack at the center of the state of Massachusetts. Home to more than 180 thousand people, the city has a population density of about 4,600 people per square mile. The city also has a continental climate with warm and humid summers averaging at 79.3°F and cold and windy winters averaging at 31.9°F and 61 inches of snow.

The city which is now known as Worcester used to be called Quinsigamond by the Pakachoag Native Americans who first inhabited the area. Quinsigamond, which means “fishing place for pickerel” most probably refers to Lake Quinsigamond which provides the tribe a source of food. In 1673, the English began establishing settlements in the area which subsequently were destroyed about 2 years later during King Philip’s War. By September 10, 1684, after the town was once again inhabited and incorporated, a certain Daniel Gookin and other people wanted to change the city’s official name from Quinsigamond to Worcester after a city of the same name in England. In 1722, Worcester became a town and in 1848, it was incorporated into a city.
